Intermediates and iPads
We've been finding it difficult to keep the intermediates on task and using their time and tech effectively. We will definitely try the contract/code of conduct idea posted by Carolyn L. We've started tracking their work by breaking the task of creating a presentation in D2L down into small chunks. This has been much more effective as it provides manageable pieces and a visual checklist and it's helping the students by making the task seem less daunting. Students seem to be finding D2L hard to work with so we're hoping that by breaking the task down they'll feel more successful.

Don't be too discouraged with trying to keep Intermediates on task with iPads... we have the same problem but with netbooks and e-texts. Now that we actually HAVE the e-text licences, we have been trying to get the students to access them as much as possible. What we're finding though is that ever prevelant problem with technology: we can't be everywhere at once!
ReplyDeleteIt is hard enough trying to keep an eye on students who we know in particular struggle with reading and writing, and then keeping them on task by one-on-one assistance if possible begins to go by the wayside. However, the big problem we find in this case is what to do with our computer 'savvy' folks, who quickly zip back and forth between the e-text pages and games that they have accessed one way or another (Minecraft **cough **cough). Aside from cloning ourselves so that we COULD be everywhere at once, I think this is just an age old problem that is popping up in 'new age' terms.
